SBB and ÖBB sign LoI to expand night services

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) signed (15-Sep-2020) a letter of intent (LoI) to expand night train services from six to ten lines, with the launch of new night services from Switzerland to Amsterdam, Rome and Barcelona. Under the agreement, the two railway operators seek to extend the Nightjet network from Switzerland by incorporating "a total of ten lines and 25 destinations" from 2022. In the first phase, a daily Zurich-Basel-Frankfurt-Cologne-Amsterdam Nightjet service will commence in Dec-2021, using leased rolling stock from RDC Asset GmbH. SBB and ÖBB also plan to increase capacity on services to Berlin, Hamburg and Prague and establish a new connection to Leipzig, Rome, Barcelona and Dresden, commencing 2023. ÖBB plans to invest in new rolling stock, with new night trainsets scheduled "to come into service gradually over a period of time". [more - original PR]
