KiwiRail adjusts South Island tourist service schedule amid low demand

KiwiRail revised (25-Mar-2021) its tourism rail service schedule for the South Island "to better reflect lower customer demand" amid border closures to international tourists. The amended schedule is as follows:

  • The TranzAlpine service will operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Fridays only;
  • The Coastal Pacific will operate twice weekly on Saturdays and Sundays;

KiwiRail group chief executive Greg Miller stated: "The decision to reduce the TranzAlpine service from four days a week to two was not an easy one but reflects the current reality of a service which had 75 per cent international passengers before the COVID-19 border restrictions".
