JR East, Hitachi and Toyota to develop new hybrid test vehicles

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) signed (06-Oct-2020) an agreement with Hitachi and Toyota Motor Corporation to collaborate on the development of test railway vehicles equipped with hybrid systems. Under the agreement, Hitachi and JR East will develop railway hybrid drive system technologies with Toyota's technologies acquired through development of the Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle and the SORA fuel cell bus. The test rolling stock, branded as HYBARI, will be equipped with hybrid systems feature hydrogen powered fuel cells and storage batteries as a power source.
