Iran's Ministry of Transport & Urban Development is seeking to expand railway relations and cooperation with Azerbaijan's Government (tehrantimes.com, 15-Sep-2020). Iran's transport & urban development minister Mohammad Eslami expressed interest in the expansion of regional rail infrastructure and communications between the two countries, citing: "we can help bring the two countries closer and strengthen cooperation between the two sides". As previously reported by the Centre for Rail, Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (IRIR) and Azerbaijan Railways agreed to develop a rail line between Rasht and Astara, with IRIR negotiating with Russian operators to extend the route with a commercial service to Moscow.
